5 things you need to know
about renting a limo

  • Cars in a parking lot

As prom season, summer weddings and sunshine escapes beckon, here are some questions you may want to ask when picking a limousine company to chauffeur a special evening. Industry officials and regulators alike say there are guidelines to keep in mind:

1. Don’t let price be your only consideration

After shopping around for the best price, you should ask for the company’s safety record. Ask for their Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration (CVOR) number, used by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to track a company’s accidents and convictions. MTO can provide a public abstract.

2. Make sure the company you plan to hire has insurance and is licensed to operate

Ask the company to provide you with proof of insurance and their license to carry passengers. Be sure to check how many passengers the company is allowed to carry in each vehicle.

3. Check it out

It may sound silly, but people have been known to book based on the pictures they saw online and then were disappointed when their ride arrived “in the flesh.” Go and have a look, make sure the limo you’re renting is roomy enough. If it’s for a wedding, the limo’s interior colours may even be a consideration.

4. Ask about gratuities

Is tip for the limo driver included in the total amount? Is there a standard amount expected? Find out beforehand and have the necessary cash on-hand.

5. Get it in writing

Ask for a written agreement with the cost, deposit required, refund policies, pick-up/drop-off times, arrival and departure locations, type of limo requested and specific services you expect. Read the contract carefully and ask questions if you don’t understand something. A good limo company will be happy to answer questions.
