There's also the issue with people driving without any driving lights at night, or people driving with their highbeams on in the city.

I keep a full set of bulbs with me all the time so that I can replace them as needed. If visibility is poor, I want to see and to be seen.

Only one red light to the rear is required, so you can drive with one burnt out. Brake lights are different: technically you don't need any unless your vehicle is over 2.05m wide or 6.1m long [HTA 62(29)]. Having said that you are required to signal slowing down or stopping either by stop lamps or by an arm signal. So if you have no brake lights and you don't use an arm signal, it is an offence [HTA 142(8)]

When your driving on a dark rural road with one headlight. Not only is your vision cut in half. The on coming traffic could think that your vehicle is far away in the distance. That could lead to a big surprise.

It is NOT legal to drive with a tail light out and a so called fix it ticket is an OPTION with police. Particularly with the OPP up north here.

Its legal to have only one tail light. As for headlights the police have to give you 24hrs to fix it (fix it ticket)

This time of year when it's dark much of the time, whenever you park by a store you can check the reflection in the windows to see if all your brake lights are working.

The nice thing about many Subarus is that they have FIVE brake lights + plus separate amber turn lights.

I can't believe that manufacturers are still allowed to sell vehicles that combine tail, brake and turn lights in a single bulb. Even my trailer has separate bulbs for each function, but it was made in Germany.

Eric Lai said: "when one bulb blows, the other often soon follows". That hasn't been my experience, and I've kept track of this for a long time. In my opinion, the life of a bulb is related to the number (and severity) of physical or electrical shocks to which it's been subjected - either due to rough handling prior to delivery to the car owner, or through hitting potholes. Of course, there are manufacturing inconsistencies as well...

On my vehicle, if the cruise control isn't working, my brake lights are completely out as well! If I notice a vehicle with a light out, and I can safely do so, I make them aware of it--usually they don't know--either at a red light, or if we pull into the same parking lot, etc. It doesn't cost me anything to do this, and it may save a life. Happy and safe motoring, everyone!
