I worked at a rust check for several years...(and i am still on-call for the busy season) There are a few things that i have seen and experienced with customer cars and with my own vehicles that you need to know. 1) some vehicles are more prone to rust...metal quality is paramount...as a rule, german cars are less prone to corode 2) its not so much the type of rust proofing, but rather the application...make sure the staff get into the doors, rocker panels, above the gas tank/muffler, etc..all the places where road salt will accumulate. 3) WASH YOUR VEHICLE DURING THE WINTER!! And dont rely on the drive thru washes...go to a coin op and rinse your vehicle's under carriage....better yet, if you can use a garden hose with less pressure, that would be preferable. Too much presure will wash the rustproffing away.

I wouldn't expect to see an 05 rust anyway. Come look at my 1999 Honda civic with 330,000km's on its original paint and not even so much as a bubble anywhere on the body. Only 4 Krown applications in all these years. Oil and water doesn't mix. Simple science.

The owner's manual of my 1997 Acura EL says rustproofing is not required. It has minor rust starting at the rear right wheel area. Some 30 years ago I rustproofed other vehicles and they rusted quickly. My guess is flushing dirt from any pockets that trap dirt may be helpful. The way the metal is made is more important than aftermarket rustproofing. Check the owner's manual.

You want proof that it does, just look at any other car around that age. Somehow Mazda managed to screw the galvanizing process, that shows in the early Mazda 3s. They figured it out after '05 model year though.

People are not "against" rustproofing. However people are having a problem with this article because undercoating does not provide protection that people think it does. The oil will gets washed away after a couple of times driving in the rain. You can forget about any protection there after. The underside of the car is also not really where the problem with rust is since it dries quickly while driving because of exposure to air. The real problem is in nooks and crannies where moisture accumulates, however oil spray can't get in those places anyways. This article is really an advertisement for Rust Check.

My Toyota and wifes Honda both are showing rust. It breaks my heart as I paid a lot of money for these two cars.

Mazda should be ashamed of itself . Take a look at Mazda MPV, Protege or 3 - rear wheel well rust is practically an epidemic.

We got a Toyota Matrix and a Hyundai Santa Fe. The Matrix has almost double the mileage and is two years older than the '06 Santa Fe. The Hyundai has electronic rust-proofing.
I did some selective rust proofing with WD-40 all around the car and discovered that the Matrix is in a much better shape (there are some stone chips which may require some attention, but other than that no complaints).

For some reason the Volvos I've been driven for 30+ years don't rust.
My Montana on the other hand..... is a total rust bucket even with undercoating.

I had a '99 Montana that I did not rustproof. The rocker panels began showing signs of rust after 3 years; underbody rust was rampant by this point. After 10 yrs of service, with completely rusted-out rockers, replaced it with an '09 Montana. Lesson learned, I had this one done at Krown. After 3 winters the rockers look fine and the underbody is as good as new. My only qualm is regarding the cost of rustproofing vs. increase in trade-in value: I don't think it's necessarily there for this vehicle but will keep spraying anyway.
