The car: 1983 Pontiac Firebird.

The owner: Gianni Mignardi, Toronto.

The story: Gianni ordered the car new in March, 1983 (2.8-litre, 6 cylinder, 5 speed, T-roof with a Trans Am package; black with a sand-grey interior) and it took about six weeks to be delivered.

He was 24 at the time and bought it from an ex-girlfriend’s stepfather who was a salesman at Marvin Starr Pontiac Buick on Eglinton Ave. E. in Scarborough.

When he took delivery, he learned the car had been built in California at the same factory where Corvettes were made “because it has a T-roof.”

“Now, over 31 years later, it only has just over 49,000 km on it,” says Gianni.

Everything is original “except for the tires, battery and the knob on the shifter — I still have the original one). Even the custom ‘Wolf’ bra is original. Thanks to 31 years of Armor All, it’s still in great shape.”

Gianni says he was living on his own; his family was overseas.

“I had no car and I needed one. I couldn’t date girls on the TTC any longer so I started looking for a good used car.

“One thing led to another; I bought this one.”

After driving it for 20,000 kilometres that summer, he thought so much of the car that he couldn’t bring himself to drive it in winter.

“So I started putting it away and bought an old Volkswagen Rabbit to keep me on the road.”

He says it’s still in showroom condition and he can’t believe the paint is 31 years old. He says his family loves the car (“thank God”) and he takes it to cruises and other car shows, adding he was always a car enthusiast because his Dad owned two 1950s Pontiac Strato Chiefs and a 1968 Pontiac GTO.

“My Dad had to sell it (the GTO) and the buyer still has it in mint condition. I can’t afford to buy it back.”
