The Car: 1972 Chevelle SS 454
The Owners: Henry and Lydia Coffey, Brampton
The Story: When is a car not a car? When it’s a time machine.
That’s how the Coffey family sees their big red beauty. It’s been with them for 41 years and every member of the family has special memories of it.
Henry and his wife, Lydia, ordered the car in early September of 1971, took delivery of it in December, and have owned it ever since.
It was equipped with the standard Chevelle Super Sport (SS) options plus the 454 cubic inch engine, turbo 400 transmission, bucket seats, console, tinted glass and vinyl top.
For the next five years, the Chevelle was the family’s daily driver. It even made a road trip to Florida and back. But then Lydia started thinking they should take it off the road during the harsh Canadian winters and get a different daily driver.
“Well here we are almost 37 years later and we still have the car,” Henry says. “And we’re glad of it. It’s part of the family, with both our kids (now grown adults) having memories of going to car shows and touring in Dad’s red car.”
The car got a complete restomod in 2010, including a fuel-injected 555 cubic inch,700-HP engine to replace the 454 and all new or upgraded driveline parts.
“It’s our time machine, our instant connection to the past,” Henry says. “And after 41 years, it’s more fun to drive than ever.”
