Eye Candy: 1962 GMC half-ton pickup

Published September 27, 2013

The car: 1962 GMC 1/2-ton pickup
The owner: Paul Smith, Tottenham, ON
The story: Ever heard of Murphy’s B/A Service? No? Well there’s a reason for that: it never existed. But if it had, its official truck would have looked like this. And here is why.

When Paul Smith was a boy, back in the ’60s when his dad worked for the Toronto-based British American Oil Company, his dad nicknamed him “Murphy” and the name stuck.

Flash forward several decades to 2006, and Paul comes across this 1962 GMC half-ton in non-working condition. He buys it and immediately begins a total body-off frame restoration, doing 100 per cent of the work himself with no outside help whatsoever.

“It was a seven-year, labour-of-love restoration” he says.

When the came to decide on a paint scheme for the truck, he decided on the British American (B/A) colour scheme of green, white and red in honour of his dad, and designed the “Murphy’s B/A Service” logo for the doors.

“The truck is about 95 per cent stock, including the original 283 V8 engine,” Paul says. “My wife and I have been driving it as much as we can and loving every mile we put on it. It’s a blast to drive and, I must admit, it turns some heads.”
