The car: 1956 Chevrolet Bel-Air
The owners: John and Betty-Jean Lawrence of Toronto
The story: You could forgive the Lawrences if they almost never took their baby out of the garage. It’s a mint-condition beauty that took John and his sons years to restore.
But this vintage Chevy logs more clicks than some “everyday” cars.
The fun, and the road trips, started when the Lawrences entered it in the Performanceworld car show in 2009 and won Best in Class.
Exhilarated, they immediately took off for Route 66 — and haven’t looked back since.
“We drove to Chicago, taking Route 66 all the way to Santa Monica, Calif., and up the coast through the Big Sur,” Betty-Jean says. “Our route home took us though Lake Tahoe, Reno, Cheyene and Madison County. We also went on a few smaller trips to Vermont, Tobermorey, Old Quebec City and Kamouraska.”
Whew. Their next big road trip was through the Maritime provinces, and this month the Lawrences are taking a six-week trip across Canada to Vancouver, down the coast to Santa Monica, back across Route 66 to Graceland and then up to Cleveland to visit the “Christmas Story” house.
“Cars are meant to be driven!” the Lawrences say.
