The car: 1954 Chevy ½-ton pickup
The owner: Brendan Calder, Toronto
The story: Back in the ’50s, Brendan Calder was a little lad whose dad owned Bob Calder’s Esso — a full-service gas station in Oshawa — and a sweet Chevy half-ton pickup.
“I grew up in that station, and in that truck,” he recalls fondly.
Years later, after the station had been torn down and his father had passed away, Brendan found a badly beaten up Chevy half ton and knew he had to have it.
“We though it would be a great way to commemorate Dad,” he says. “We had it restored using a photo of the one I grew up in, using the authentic Esso red, white and blue colours.”
Brendan proudly notes “Bob’s truck” is not just for show. He regularly drives it around town in Toronto, where it sometimes leads the Mayfair kids’ parade, and rewards anyone who smiles at it with an “OOGA!” horn honk.
“Great fun,” he says. “I think of my ole man and how hard he worked at Bob’s Esso every time I go for a ride. It feels really good.”
