Where are you that most new cars have any form of automatic lighting it all . Here in Michigan most new ford, Chrysler, and Nissan , have no automatic lighting at all. Thus allowing dangerous driving in all light and weather conditions. The technology is here. Time to use it automakers. Safetymichman.

Our Volvos have all lights, all the time and a left-rear fog just like the Saab -GREAT. Have you noticed though that many new cars with LED-only tail-lights are near-invisible in the snow? The bulbs don't generate enough heat the melt the snow off. Sometimes old-school incandescent bulbs are superior.

John - As far as I know the manual light switch on cars has 3 settings: 1) off, which means just the DTRL are on, which usually means lower than low beam headlights only; 2) parking lights only, which means DTRL still functioning plus dash lights plus all other exterior lights except full power headlights, which means that your tail lights are fully lit; 3) all lights on, which means same as (2) but now your full power headlights are also on. High/low beam headlight control is usually a separate control on the steering column.

The problem, as I see it, is that many new vehicles now have two levels on their light switches. There is the normal full on position, a second low beam position, as well as the off or DRL only.

Far as I can tell the low position turns on the headlights to a low intensity, and turns on the dash lights, but does not turn on the rear lights. This is a problem because I think people turn their lights to the first position and believe that their vehicles lights are on.

Wouldn't it just be easier and solve the problem if the manufacturers just set all the lights to on when the car is running! The only control a drive needs is a high beam to be used in some conditions.

I'm very pleased with my Saab 9-5 in this regard. In that car, all lights go off when the key is off, whether the switch is in the "on" position or not. I turn them on and leave them that way forever.

I also have a rear fog light and I love it! It not only helps me stay visible in fog and spray, but I also like to flick it on when I pick up a tailgater. They always back off, thinking I'm slowing down.

I don't see the problem with turning the lights on. My autopilot is set differently. I get into my car and I put on the seatbelt and turn on the lights, even in cars I've had to rent while mine was in the shop. It's all part of good driving habits. Do you drive without putting on your seatbelt? No, right? So why didn't you keep the habit of turning on the lights as well? Plain lazyness.

licoricepizza - Never heard of a car having it's dash lights on with just the DTRL operating. I'm a GM guy & any car that I've owned there are no dash lights with just the DTRL, only with the full lighting system activated.

The past year or so I've noticed an alarming number of vehicles without their full lights on at night. Recently I got a new car and found that I was guilty of the same thing. Why? Like Jim said, the dash lights were on, subconsciously (yet wrongly) telling me the headlights were also on. Ultimately, it was my fault for not flicking the lights on, but at the same time I can't believe this is a "feature" in new models. It boggles the mind.
