Mercedes C-Class Coupe offers luxury and performance

For 2017, the C 300, which comes to Canada only in four-wheel drive format, is larger in every dimension than the car it replaces and it sits 15 mm lower to the ground than the sedan version.

QUEBEC CITY: The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is said to have “looks that thrill with the performance to match.”

One look at the redesigned C 300 4MATIC for 2017 leaves little doubt about the first part of this description.

Get behind the wheel for a few minutes and you realize how true the second part can be, especially when you consider the high-powered C 43 AMG 4MATIC, C 63 AMG and C 63 S AMG versions that are slated to arrive on our shores later in the year.

So for the immediate future, Canadians will have only the sleek and sporty-looking base model C 300 4MATIC Coupe to consider.


This is a car that can’t match its higher horsepower brethren in outright power, but does handle quite nicely as we found during a drive along a winding route through the picturesque Saguenay area of Quebec.

The turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine delivers an adequate 241 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque that takes the car from 0-100 km/h in six seconds, according to the manufacturer. While the engine sounds a bit noisy on the outside, inside the cabin is quiet and comfortable.

Rather than a performance coupe, this variant is more akin to a luxury sedan, minus the two back doors.

However, the cabin is cozy with a smallish back seat area that will likely only see use in a pinch.

Entry and exit from the rear is difficult, even with power front seats that slide fore and aft as needed. The 40/20/40 split rear seats fold for added storage to the 400 litres available in the rear cargo area.

The interior is spectacular, just like the sedan version with the same dash and rich-looking materials.

Outside, it carries over some of the design features from the top-shelf S-Class Coupe such as the long hood and diamond radiator grille. With its sloping roofline and short rear deck, this is a car that’s sure to attract attention.

With a wheelbase 80 mm longer, the new C-Class Coupe is 95 mm longer overall and 40 mm wider.

Even with the increased size, weight has been reduced by 50 kg even though the vehicle is stiffer and stronger through the use of more high-strength materials.

The weight reduction comes in part from a greater proportion of aluminum and also light alloy components in the fenders, trunk hood and trunk lid.

Starting at $48,100, the C 300 4MATIC is loaded with standard features like keyless start, a taut sport suspension and a panoramic sunroof.

One option is an AIRMATIC air suspension ($1,800) on the front and rear axles that is electronically controlled and continuously adjusts damping.

This comes with the Drive Select system, allowing the driver to dial up a drive setting from Normal to Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.

Among the other key Canadian options is the Premium Package ($3,400), which includes a rear view camera, navigation system and high performance LED headlamp system.

Build on that with the Premium Plus Package ($3,000) to add automatic garage door opener, parking assist system, Sirius XM satellite radio, hands free access, ambient lighting, power trunk closer, keyless go package and illuminated door sill panels.

An AMG Sport Package ($2,000) is available with AMG exterior and interior touches plus five-spoke wheels, velour floor mats, ARTICO leather dashboard, and the diamond grille finished in chrome.

On the safety front an Intelligent Drive Package ($2,700) is offered with features like active blind spot assist and active lane keeping assist, cross traffic assist, adaptive cruise control and an autonomous emergency braking system called Pre-Safe Brake and Pre-Safe Collision.

Among the optional stand-alone features is a 13-speaker, 590-watt Burmester surround sound system.

This is all in addition to a number of technological advances that are standard such as Crosswind Assist that helps keep the car firmly planted in a strong side wind and Collision Prevention Assist Plus that provides visual and acoustic warnings of an imminent rear end collision.

All in all, the C 300 4MATIC Coupe makes for a smooth, comfortable luxurious ride with a touch of performance thrown in.

But if real power is the name of the game, wait a while for the high-performance versions to make their way here.

The V8-powered C 63 and C 63 S models arrive this summer, promising 469 and 503 hp respectively with the latter promising a 0-100 time of under four seconds. Both are rear-drive coupes.

The less-powerful C43 4MATIC arrives in the fall with 362 hp and a 0-100 time of 4.7 seconds.
