DETROIT–BMW AG is ramping up its production of gas-electric hybrid vehicles, giving consumers hybrid options with the 7 Series and X6 crossover vehicle.

The Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid, introduced Sunday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, will offer an eight-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor integrated into the transmission.

The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid offers a more advanced two-mode hybrid system, mating an eight-cylinder engine and electric drive to provide about a 20 per cent fuel economy improvement. Production of both hybrids will begin this year and arrive in dealerships by the end of 2009.

BMW also introduced a Z4 roadster, maintaining the same long hood and low seating positions as its predecessor.
