DETROIT–Volkswagen AG is showing off a concept sports car at the Detroit auto show that is expected to get 55 miles per U.S. gallon (4.27 L/100 km) based on clean diesel technology.
The German automaker unveiled the Bluesport on Sunday at the North American International Auto Show.
VW chair Martin Winterkorn said the company is handling the auto industry's current crisis well, and it will continue to invest in making more fuel efficient vehicles along with spending $1 billion to open a plant in Tennessee.
Volkswagen announced earlier Sunday that it set a new record in yearly sales in 2008 of 6.23 million vehicles worldwide, compared with 6.19 million vehicles sold in 2007. Those figures include Volkswagen group brands such as Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini.
