Kia Canada is recalling about 4,500 cars to fix possible faulty wiring that could start fires.
The company confirmed Friday the automaker had informed Transport Canada that it would be notifying the owners of 3,295 Soul compact wagons for the 2010 model year and 1,213 Sorento sedans for the 2011 model year about the possible defects and need to replace wiring harnesses.
Kia, whose sales have surged in recent years, said some wiring harnesses in the Soul’s front door trim panels and the Sorento’s front and rear door trim panels may have been improperly soldered, which could lead to electrical shorts.
Kia Canada spokesman Jack Sulymka noted the company is unaware of any cases or issues involving wiring problems here despite the recall.
In the U.S., Kia Motors is sending notices to owners of 56,000 Soul and Sorento models from the same years.
Kia Motors has also reported no accidents or injuries because of the possible defect south of the border.
Johnson Controls, a major auto parts maker, supplied some of the lighting harnesses in the U.S., according to Kia Motors.
