Toyota starts Prius recalls in Canada to fix brakes

BUSINESS REPORTER

Toyota Motor Corp. started a recall today of hybrid vehicles around the world - including Canada - to repair momentary slipping brakes.

In its third recall here in less than three months, the company said it would send notices to the owners of 437,000 Prius models and other gasoline-electric vehicles to “update” current software that is causing improper brake “feel” for drivers on bumpy or slippery roads..

The recall will affect more than 3,273 Toyota Prius cars and 309 Lexus HS250h sedans here, Toyota Canada confirmed late this morning Toyota Canada acknowledged the problem last week and said it was focusing on “a small number of reports” relating to the 2010 Prius, the company’s flagship green car, and the HS250h sedan.

The company made an adjustment in production of the vehicles last month to correct the problem but did not indicate what it would do for the owners of vehicles that the automaker had already made.

Meanwhile, the U.S. National Highway Transportation Safety Administration confirmed this morning that it had received 76 complaints about Toyota steering problems.

The complaints involve owners of the 2009 and 2010 Corolla compact who say their vehicles can unexpectedly veer to the right or left at 60 km/h or higher.

Toyota Canada announced the recall of more than 270,000 vehicles last month to fix sticky accelerator pedals and also sent notices late last year to thousands of other vehicle owners to make adjustments so floor mats don’t rub against the pedals.

The company also halted temporarily halted the sale and production of vehicles including the Corolla compact and matrix crossover to address the problem. The Corolla is the country’s second best selling car.
