Canadian Camaro possible
It seems the wheels are turning at GM's Oshawa, Ontario plant, in an effort to secure a flexible manufacturing facility, which could build a new Chevrolet Camaro. Recently, unionized workers voted to accept significant changes at the plant, after GM and the CAW warned that without some movement, a further investment in Oshawa could be jeopardized. GM already announced last year that the plant will loose Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chevrolet Impala, Pontiac Grand Prix and the Buick Allure production in 2008, despite being ranked number one in North America for initial quality by J.D. Power. The new investment would likely centre on the coming rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform cars, which could include the next generation Impala, Monte Carlo, Camaro, and even GTO. Reportedly, after Camaro production ended in St.Therese, Que., in 2002, GM and the CAW established an understanding that if Camaro came back, it would be built in Canada, a notion that bodes well for Oshawa. The changes, which only come into effect if GM awards the flex manufacturing to Canada, focus mainly on shorter paid break times and the contracting out of maintenance and custodial staff.
