I can't recall a tester with a sub six-digit price tag that attracted as many eyeballs, or generated as many thumbs-up, waves and "Nice car!" comments as the Volvo C30.

A new S80 debuts for 2007 with two under-the-hood debuts: the first V8 in a Volvo sedan and an all-new inline 6-cylinder. A world first is the Personal Car Communicator, a pocket-sized control module that sends and receives information from the car, allowing owners to know whether their car is locked or if there is someone in the vehicle. Also available is the Volvo Premium Sound system with an Alpine digital amplifier and Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound.

Volvo's entry-level sedan receives a few updates for 2007, including optional new wheel designs and a new overhead console and rearview mirror design. The polished interior features a thin, free-floating centre console, durable T-Tec upholstery and a host of safety equipment, including whiplash protection, inflatable side curtains and side airbags.

The C70's three-piece lid is an engineering marvel that draws a crowd whenever it operates, but what about the rest of the car?

About 10 years ago, the world's most famous actor-turned-Champ Car team owner, Paul Newman, resolved to build the ultimate stealth car for getting around quickly in his Connecticut environs.

Volvo's new entry point vehicle has been designed to appeal to those active urbanites. Is it on the mark? Is it still a Volvo? Is it fresh thinking? More importantly, will it impress our resident design gurus?

Many of the changes to the S60 this year are cosmetic -- deeper front spoiler, for example, and aluminum accents inside. But there's also substance with a comprehensively upgraded suspension and roll bars. Also new is a handy lane change feature: a press of the turn signal stalk makes the respective indicator light flash three times. For sport sedan fun, pick the S60 R. All-wheel-drive helps the R convert its prodigious power into effective forward motion.

This year there's an all-new base engine for the XC90: the ultra-compact, 235-hp, 3.2-litre inline-six, which sits transversely in the nose. The new engine also joins the V8 in having a 6-speed manumatic transmission. An exterior freshening includes a bigger chrome grille and other body-coloured bits. A new optional Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) alerts the driver if another vehicle is in your lane-change blind spot.

SMOGEN, SWEDEN—One of my all-time favourite movies is the 1990 comedy Crazy People, a comedy about an advertising agency based in a lunatic asylum.

Volvo offered a sports car during the late '60s and early '70s called the P1800, available either as a swoopy coupe or as an original shooting brake. The latter's rear end, characterized by a large glass section, inspired the design of the new C30, a hatchback marking Volvo's return to the lifestyle, urban-oriented segment.

The original C70 coupe and convertible were the cars that began Volvo's styling evolution away from the dreaded box. The new one stays faithful to Volvo's more streamlined new look, but is a much better value, since it's two cars in one. With its retractable hardtop it functions as a snug coupe or an al fresco convertible. The top powers down into the trunk in 30 seconds.

The XC70 continues into 2007 with minor revisions. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control is now standard; the optional Convenience Package now includes a power child lock on the rear doors, privacy glass and auto dimming rearview mirror with compass; and the Adventure Package includes a new 17-inch wheel design and active bi-Xenon headlamps. With its available rear-facing, third-row seat, the XC70 is a safer and more fuel-efficient alternative to typical seven-seater SUVs.

Minor feature upgrades for Volvo's baby wagon include new wheel styles and optional Keyless Drive, which lets you unlock the car and start the engine without removing the key from your purse or pocket. These cars are solidly built, smooth, safe and quite fun to drive with precise handling. The wagon features a properly flat-folding rear seat, but its cargo deck is rather narrow.

For 2007 the quintessential Volvo wagon loses one model -- the fast T5. So, if the idea of a hot-rod wagon appeals, you'll have to go the whole hog with the even faster 300-hp V70 R. A 5-speed manumatic is standard on the 2.5Ts, optional on the others except the R, which has a 6-speed. All told, it's an impressive lineup able to satisfy almost every wagon need -- including an available rear-facing third-row seat.

(Apr 26, 2007) - Volvo has long been known for making safe and reliable automobiles. If you were to stop 10 people on the street and ask them what the Scandinavian automaker is known for, chances are most would put safety at the top of the list.

The C30 shares its platform with the S40 sedan and V50 station wagon, as well as Mazda3 and the Europe-specific version of the Ford Focus. Both engines are five-cylinder; my tester was the turbo T5, with six-speed manual.

If you're looking for an open-air convertible driving experience, and want to avoid the potentially relationship-ending utterance, "Where are the back seats?" try one of the following convertibles with room for four.

Four-seat convertibles straddle the line between indulgence – the wind in your hair, the sun on your scalp – and practicality – room enough for your family and stuff.

Volvo follows in the steps of other luxury brands by bringing a compact, more affordable offering to market here with its C30 hatchback. With room for four in a Scandinavian-styled interior, a funky rear hatch design and lots of versatility, the C30 also has some surprises lurking under its sheetmetal. The T5 produces lots of turbo punch with 216 hp and a sporty 6-speed manual transmission, while traction control and a multitude of airbags are standard.

It's hard to fathom the Ocean Race edition of the Volvo XC70. This special edition of the all-wheel drive wagon was launched as sort of a landlubbing stablemate to the seriously fast Volvo Ocean Race yachts that are to finish their seven-month round-the-world race today in Sweden.

Sharing its Volvo-sourced P2 platform with the Freestyle crossover means this full-size sedan affords huge interior volume, a trunk that can swallow eight golf bags and a lofty, SUV-like seating position. New standard equipment for 2007 includes side-impact and head-curtain airbags, plus SIRIUS Satellite Radio. An optional navigation system and heated seats are also now available on the SEL trim.

Saab has been viewed as something less than a knockout by Canadian drivers, with the brand being just a little bit offbeat for mainstream taste.
