In its twists and turns, Saturn's quest to define itself somewhat suggests Canada's own convoluted search for national identity.
The brand currently is trying out "Euro-flavoured," as we test-drive "multiculturalism."
Most Saturns are, or will be, virtual Opels (GM seems to have deep doubts about the saleability of the German name in North America).
But then there's the Saturn Outlook, an all-American mid-size crossover built – like its siblings, the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave – in a new, cutting-edge plant near Lansing, Mich.
Product consistency may not be a GM strong suit, but Outlook, taken on its merits, looks like a winner.
GM sees it as a minivan replacement. Shoppers are tired of sliding doors and seats that fold into the floor or lift out, the General contends. They now prefer a flashier rig, with car-like handling, high seating and hauling ability.
There's only one drivertrain: a 3.6-litre V6 and six-speed automatic.
The two trim levels, XE and XR, both offer a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The tester was an XE FWD nicely done in Ocean Mist blue with Ebony cloth interior.
Outlook base prices: $33,990 to $41,265. Price as tested: $39,335.
