A quarter century of quality journalism

A quarter century of journalism

ANDREW WALLACE/TORONTO STAR

Jim Kenzie picks the Top 10 cars he thinks supplies the pure joy of driving. Surprisingly, his beloved 1977 AMC Hornet is not one of them.

WHEELS EDITOR

Jim Kenzie came into the Star newsroom at One Yonge St. this week.

He doesn't come down here very often, since he works from an office in his home near Milton, but he's looking sprightly these days and we wanted an up-to-date photo for his logo.

We surprised him with that cake that you see on our cover today. Editor-in-Chief Fred Kuntz told the newsroom of some of Kenzie's accomplishments since his first Star article of May 30, 1983, and then Kenzie spoke a few words too, completely off the cuff.

He told us of how newspapers are made or broken by the quality and integrity of their editorial content, and reminded us of the mantra of the Wheels section, which is that the journalism attracts readers, and those readers attract advertisers so that the business of the newspaper can be successful – not the other way around.

And that's what Kenzie's been doing now for 25 years. You may not always like what he has to say – Lorraine Sommerfeld's not too impressed in her column this week, and a number of readers are incensed on today's letters page on W10 – but you can always count on Kenzie to deliver the straight goods about automobiles, as he sees it.

After all, many more readers wrote to thank him for having the guts to represent them, and for finally saying what they've been thinking against unwelcome government legislation that they consider unrealistic and unfair.

Here at Wheels, Kenzie is one of a team of about two-dozen freelance writers and contributors who have defined this section as the biggest and best automotive publication in North America.

We don't blow our horn about this too often, but this week, what the heck.

Congratulations on 25 years at the top, Jim, and we're looking forward to many more.
