An abyss of ambition, Hyundai (the word means modern in Korean) is still refining its "brand truth," as the image makers say.
But one pillar is firmly in place: exceeding shopper expectations.
The firm's new flagship sedan, the Azera, reflects this approach. My lavishly equipped grey tester, with beige leather, even had a power screen on the back window for that corps diplomatique cachet and -- thank you! -- a tape deck.
Replacing the staid XG350, Azera comes only with a 3.8-litre, 263 hp, aluminum V6 and a five-speed automatic.
Starting prices range from $34,495 (base) to $37,495 (Premium).
THREE STARS
Smooth, pampering ride.
Excellent back-seat legroom.
Named Best New Family Sedan Over $35,000 by Canadian car writers.
THREE STRIKES
Decorative, derivative styling (there's even a BMW-style, raised trunk lid, known as the Bangle butt).
The just-invented Azera nameplate draws an emotional blank.
Tight forehead room.
