Q: I have a propane vehicle that failed the emissions test. Are there accredited Drive Clean repair shops for propane autos? Or can I just go to any propane garage for repair and/or exemption?
A: Drive Clean program spokesperson Charles Ross replies:
If a vehicle does not meet emissions standards, repairs can be made at any repair shop or even performed by the vehicle owner.
However, to take advantage of the Drive Clean repair cost limit (RCL), repair estimates and any emission-related repairs must be performed at an accredited Drive Clean Facility (DCF).
This requirement applies to all vehicles, regardless of your vehicle's fuel type.
For the nearest location of a Drive Clean Facility that can perform emissions-related repairs to alternative-fuel vehicles, contact Drive Clean at 1-888-758-2999 or visit driveclean.com (click on "alternate fuels" in the search engine).
It's best to call the designated facility beforehand to ensure that a qualified alternative-fuel technician will be available upon your arrival.
The repair cost limit may allow you to obtain a conditional pass to renew your vehicle registration while deferring emissions system repairs that raise repair costs over $450.
It also ensures that your vehicle's emissions system faults are diagnosed and that at least some emissions-related repairs are performed.
