Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix

Special to the Star
BEST: Pontiac Vibe SE/Toyota Matrix XRThe California-built Pontiac Vibe and Ontario-made Toyota Matrix are both based on the Toyota Corolla, and start with a 1.8 L four-cylinder. I prefer the 2.4 L that comes in the Vibe GT and AWD, and Matrix XR, XRS and AWD, starting at $18,995 for the Pontiac GT, and $19,450 for Matrix XR.
They're roomy, their interiors are easy to clean, and above all, they're freight-friendly: fold all the seats, including the front passenger chair, and you can visit the lumberyard and bring home eight-foot boards that some pickup trucks can't carry with the tailgate up.
They may be sisters, but the list of features isn't identical, and for 2009, Vibe comes out slightly ahead. Both have standard anti-lock brakes, but Vibe has electronic stability control on all models; it's optional on Matrix XR and AWD (it's standard on those in 2010).
I also find Vibe's styling, with its little rear side window, creates less of a blind spot for shoulder checks.
GM has continued the Vibe into 2010, and its shared mechanicals with the Matrix shouldn't make Pontiac's demise a concern.
NEXT BEST: Hyundai Elantra Touring GL
The Hyundai Elantra Touring would have knocked the Vibe/Matrix twins off their top spot, except for the fact that electronic stability control isn't available on any model.
A 2.0 L four-cylinder is standard on all, but the $19,995 GL with automatic transmission is the best bet, with a/c, power mirrors, cruise control, and heated seats.
ALSO CONSIDER:
Subaru Impreza 2.5i ($20,995): Previous cheap-feeling interior improved for 2009.
Volkswagen Rabbit ($19,975): Solid road feel, supportive seats, and a sophisticated steering system.
